Purpose of this website

To our knowledge there is no other website giving general information on European virgin forest or its remnants. This information is mostly scattered in scientific papers on individual forests. There are also a few good books about virgin forests of selected countries. Popular books and park websites are often unreliable as they usually exaggerate the “virginity” of the parks. Thus, we have created this website to give information on Europe’s old-growth forests on a single site in a hopefully understandable form with photos.

Note that this website is in no way an “official” list of European virgin forests! There are a surprisingly large number of mostly small old-growth forest remnants in eastern Europe, only a selection of which it has been possible to include here.
